Peak season:
The weather in Bulgaria is lovely and warm from Spring until the end of Autumn, and even then the sun stays shining until after Christmas. You’ll struggle to find cheap flights to Bulgaria throughout the peak of Summer, July and August, although these months can get unbearably hot. Spring is a fantastic time to secure cheap flight tickets and avoid crowds of tourists. Although Sunny Beach is becoming increasingly popular as so many tourists flock there during the Summer you’ll find the beaches crowded with many rowdy, often drunk, tourists roaming the streets.
Off season:
December to the end of February is the coldest time of year to visit. January and February can sometimes see temperatures plummet into -20s and snow will fall sometimes knee deep or higher. That said, skiing and Winter sports can be enjoyed in many of the resorts scattered around Bulgaria. There are good mountain resorts near Sofia and you’ll find the cheapest flights to Bulgaria around the Winter. Around April and early May you’ll find cheap flights to Bulgaria and get a mix of weather. It will be pleasant and hot but nights bring rain and spectacular thunderstorms.
Secure your flight tickets a couple of months in advance to grab the best deals. If you want to avoid the tourists then opt for Spring or late Autumn, although some attractions might be closed. The heat in Summer can be unbearable for some people so consider that before you book your flights to Bulgaria. If you can be flexible with your dates and your location then you’ll find the cheapest flights to Bulgaria, especially if you book in advance. Avoid the Winter as the conditions can be very harsh and extremely cold, however snow is guaranteed so if you enjoy the cold you’ll find great deals on flight tickets.

Ryanair are another cheap airline but they do add on a big fee during the Summer if you wish to take checked in luggage with you. British Airways are probably the comfiest to fly with and you get complimentary food and drinks with them too. That said you’ll spend more money for the flight tickets so in the end it’s down to your preference.
Sofia:
Travelling around Sofia is extremely easy and very cheap thanks to the metro system in place. For 1 Bulgarian Lev you can hop on the metro and stay on it as long as you need. From the airport you’ll want to jump on the Sofia Metro Line 1 and then at Serdika you’ll have to change for Line 2. It takes around 20 minutes or so. There are also bus options available and once you get to the city you can travel around via trams. Taxis are available from outside of the airport too, however, make sure you agree on a price beforehand. Although Sofia is perfectly safe, it would be better not to travel alone in a taxi at night.
Burgas:
If you have booked your flights to Bulgaria during the Summer and are going to experience Sunny Beach then you’ll fly into Burgas. You can get bus number 15 into the city centre of Burgas and then change there for a bus to Sunny Beach. It’s the cheapest way to get there and is reliable too. If you’re not travelling to Sunny Beach then you can just get off the bus in the centre of Burgas and find your hotel. You could opt for a taxi if you have a lot of baggage however you’ll end up spending a lot more money than if you choose to use the bus.
