It takes just 2h 55m to get from the UK to Macedonia by air. However, there are factors that will affect your total flight time. For instance, a single stopover could add as much as two or three hours to your flight. However, stopovers may also decrease the cost of tickets, making your travel more affordable. There are several airports offering flights to Macedonia from the UK, although London Heathrow is the largest and offers the widest variety of flight choices. However, others include London Stanstead, which is smaller and less heavily used, London Luton Airport, London City Airport, and more. Most flights will land at Skopje Alexander the Great Airport or at Ohrid St. Paul the Aposle Airport.
London is the only city to offer direct flights to Macedonia from the UK. However, they are available on a limited basis. With that being said, there are numerous other cities that service this route, including Manchester, Edinburgh, Birmingham, and Glasgow. A flight with one stopover can take between 4h 40m – 5h 30m. A flight with two stopovers may take up to 9h. The cities of Vienna and Budapest are the two most common stopovers on this route. Return flights may stop in Zurich, Istanbul, and Belgrade, though.
UK travelers will find plenty of ways to get around Macedonia during their stay. The area’s train network is well developed and efficient, and can also connect you with other regions, including Kosovo. The bus system is also well developed, although a bit slower and more crowded. Taxis are widely available in all Macedonian cities, and car hire options are also available.
Macedonia is replete with things to see, do, and experience. From the blue waters of Lake Ohrid to the serene beauty of Galicica National Park and the heritage of the Painted Mosque of Sarena Dzamija, you’ll find things to suit any interest. Other options to explore include the National Workshop for Handmade Paper, Saint Climent of Ohrid, the ruins of Heraclea, and the Old Bazaar in Skopje.
All British citizens will need a passport with at least 90 days remaining to enter Macedonia. However, you will not need a visa as long as your stay will not exceed three months. However, if you will be there for a longer period, you will need to apply for an extension with the Macedonian Embassy in London. Also note that you must register with the police in the area where you’ll be staying within 24 hours of your arrival. Hotels will automatically register you. Failure to register can lead to a fine of up to 1,000 euros and possible detainment.
